Many people have never heard of fadogia agrestis. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, so it’s not surprising it’s a little bit niche as far as supplements are concerned.
So let’s start at the top:
What is fadogia agrestis, exactly?
Fadogia agrestis is a plant most commonly found in Nigeria. It doesn’t look like much; you could easily walk past dozens of such plants on your daily stroll without realising.
However, fadogia agrestis has powerful properties when the stem is prepared and consumed. The potential uses of the plant are still being explored. Quite frankly, there is still a heck of a lot we don’t know about its potential properties and effects.
From here on out, we’d take everything you read with a pinch of salt.
Safety first, my friends.
What does fadogia agrestis do?
Fadogia agrestis, when consumed, has several potentially desirable effects on the human body. People take it to give a boost to their bodybuilding efforts, to improve their performance on the athletics field, to kick-start their sex drive, and to attempt to treat erectile dysfunction (often abbreviated to ED) and/or impotence.
The plant is gradually growing in popularity with bodybuilders and athletes, who use it in the place of anabolic steroids.
Anabolic steroids are infamous for their side effects. We’ve covered these in detail previously, but we’ll quickly run through them again now, just to jog your memory.
Anabolic steroid side-effects:
- Low sperm count
- Diminishing testicles
- Hair loss
- Higher risk of cancer
- Increase in body hair
- Breast growth
So—perhaps it’s not surprising that athletes and bodybuilders are looking for another way to achieve their peak physical form; one that doesn’t require them to sacrifice many aspects of their health and looks.
Now, the important thing to note is that at the time of writing, there is not exactly a wealth of information out there on fadogia agrestis supplements.
Research that has been done into the plant so far has found that it can potentially increase sexual behaviours in animals as well as raising levels of the male hormone, testosterone, which is responsible for many different processes in the body.
It is unclear, however, whether fadogia agrestis would have a similar impact if consumed by humans.
Of course, the athletes and bodybuilders who are using an fadogia agrestis dosage claim the plant works to boost their energy levels, libido, and helps with any issues they may be experiencing with erectile dysfunction.
These only give us anecdotal evidence, however, which doesn’t exactly hold up to scrutiny. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at the reported properties of the plant.
Fadogia agrestis benefits (in theory!)
– Fights infection
One of the comparatively few studies into fadogia agrestis found there is a likelihood that the plant contains chemicals that may help prevent infections by several parasites found across Africa. Six chemicals present in the plant are thought to be the cause of this property.
– Acts as an aphrodisiac
The science behind aphrodisiacs is a little patchy, however, research into rats several years ago found that after consuming fadogia agrestis, the rats were far more sexually active. The researchers at the time put this down to there being higher levels of testosterone in the rats’ blood.
– Relieves pain
Other testing done on animals found that the plant appeared to relieve pain at around the same level as aspirin, affecting both the peripheral and central nervous system, which are responsible for the sensation of pain.
Does fadogia agrestis have any side effects?
Potentially—we simply don’t know at this point. Animal testing has shown us that it can potentially raise testosterone levels in the blood (of male rats, that is), however, beyond this it’s hard to say anything for certain.
Some researchers have suggested that the plant might be toxic, damaging both the liver and kidneys of those consuming it. This is mostly conjecture, however! Much more testing and research is needed before we have any conclusive evidence regarding the side effects of fadogia agrestis extract.
Alternative methods of treating erectile dysfunction
Thankfully, there are a bunch of simple, easy ways to treat erectile dysfunction that don’t require you to gobble down bushels of a mysterious plant. The important thing to do is to see a doctor first of all, of course.
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by many things, so determining what exactly is causing the issue will naturally influence the kind of treatment required.
That said, here are some simple, healthy lifestyle changes that anybody can make to help improve your overall health and minimise your chances of having to live with erectile dysfunction.
– Don’t smoke
This is just great all-round advice, really. Smoking is a direct cause of erectile dysfunction, as well as hundreds of other internal problems, some of which can be life-threatening down the line.
If you don’t smoke, don’t start! If you do smoke, it’s time to quit.

– Try to reduce stress levels
Reducing one’s stress levels is far easier said than done, but it’s not impossible. By making even minor changes to your lifestyle, you can begin to work towards a calmer, more peaceful way of living.
Stress and anxiety can manifest themselves in a lot of unforeseen ways, including erectile dysfunction.
– Eat a healthy diet
Swap out junk food and sugary drinks for salads, protein-rich foods, fruit and vegetables. Your body will thank you for it—not only will you feel far better, but the likelihood that you’ll experience erectile dysfunction will drop right down.
So the next time you’re doing the weekly shop, think healthy!
– Drink less alcohol
Regularly exceeding the maximum recommended amount of alcohol per week can cause problems downstairs, both in the short term and in the long run.
Try to minimize the number of days during the week you consume alcohol, and when/if you do drink, do it sensibly and in moderation.
So, is fadogia agrestis worth it?
With the above pointers, you should be well equipped to fend off erectile dysfunction—no fadogia agrestis necessary. Since there is plenty more research to be done, we cannot back up the potential fadogia agrestis benefits.
